A word for Bullying Prevention Month
The Story
October is Bullying Prevention Month, and I want to remind everyone of something we don’t talk about enough:
Bullying doesn’t stop when we become adults.
Children can experience bullying at school, but adults can experience it in the workplace, online, in relationships, within friendships, and even in their own communities.
Being constantly criticized, humiliated, excluded, intimidated, mocked, or made to feel like you’re not good enough can affect a person’s confidence and sense of worth—regardless of their age.
And sometimes, the person being bullied becomes very good at hiding the pain.
So whether you’re 8, 18, 38, or 68, your feelings matter. Your voice matters. You deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
If you’re experiencing bullying, don’t suffer in silence. Talk to someone you trust. Document what’s happening when appropriate. Seek support. And remember that asking for help is not weakness.
And if you see someone being targeted, don’t become a bystander when you can be an ally.
A kind word can change someone’s day. Standing beside someone can remind them they’re not alone.
This Bullying Prevention Month, let’s remember that prevention isn’t just about protecting children.
It’s about creating a culture of respect for everyone—at every age.
I’m Monetia Smothers, and through In the Limelight, I want to continue giving people a voice, sharing real stories, and reminding people that they are seen, they are heard, and they matter.
Let’s be the reason someone feels seen instead of invisible.
